Archos 5 : the review
Archos 5 US l samedi 13/09 (02:53)

The Archos 5 screen shines. It shines way more than the 605’s one. The granular effect of the fourth and fifth generation players has disappeared. Here, it’s a glossy screen. The screen shines, the chromium shines, it’s spectacular.

This new glossy screen brings what the 605’s screen wasn’t able to bring. It’s brighter and clearer.

Viewing angles are good but... in the dark only. Actually, like I said, in the day it shines. If you check on the sides, it’s not the video that you’ll see but your face.

In daylight, the glossy effect offers a much better visibility compared to the 605. In the dark, the 605’s screen was already better than the 604 WiFi’s one, here the progress continues. The Archos 5 screen is amazing, the colors are nice and hot. At the same moment I write these lines, I’m currently watching comparing the 605’s screen with the 5’s screen. I am simply amazed. There are no doubts, the 16 million colors are definitely there ! The black color is pretty well rended, better than on the 605.

The high resolution screen of 800x480 pixels is pure happiness. Ratio is still 5/3.

The touch screen has been improved as well. There is still a thin layer on the surface of the screen. But now, it’s invisible (no granular effect, I already told you so). It’s difficult to describe the touch experience. I can definitively feel my finger sink into the screen. An overally nice sensation. The screen is soft before getting hard (I told you that it was difficult to describe that sensation !).

In daylight, fingerprints will unfortnately be visible. In the dark, they will be quickly forgotten because of the brightness of the screen. Fingerprints are definitively more visible on the Archos 5 than on the 605. Maybe one day, we will have the perfect screen... Also, good news, the touch screen can’t get (easily) scratched !

Little deception, however, the screen is not multi-touch (technology that allows you to use two fingers at a time on the touch screen, which is used in the iPod Touch and the iPhone).
