Unboxing the Archos 5

Concerning packaging, it would of be difficult to make it smaller. It’s tiny ! Ecologists will be satisfied ;).

Once you open the packaging, you come face to face with the Archos 5, protected with its plastic protection. And as it is all covered with chromium, you may actually see your face... cry of joy as you just received your new Archos hi-tech toy ;).

We raise the cover and we can find... nothing special actually.

The Archos earbuds (check out the audio chapter for more informations about them), the USB cable and some booklets (starting guide, legal mentions, security notices, an eMusic coupon and a publicity advertising the optional Archos games pack.

DC-in is optional, as we have been used to in Archos new philosophy. Not even a case to protect the luxurious chromium ! Shameful ? Not that much as Archos offers a free wipe in order to clean all your fingerprints ! Better than nothing, no :P ?

The installation

New feature : the installation wizard

It’s a very nice new feature at Archos : an installation wizard. Why didn’t the guys at Archos think about that sooner ? It’s a very nice thing, in 4 steps your Mobile Internet Tablet is nicely configurated.

Archos integrated that same kind of installation wizard in different menus (mail client, TV program guide, DVR Station, etc.).

In order to be able to enjoy the three free plugins (Web, Radio, TV and Widgets), you will need to register your product on Archos’ website. Nothing complicated...

Starting the Archos 5 for the first time takes more than 15 seconds. As on the 605 WiFi, a sleep mode exists but the function has not been implemented yet.

Let’s hope that we won’t live the Archos fourth generation experience again. At that time, Archos promised a sleep function but it simply never appeared !

It is not possible to copy files bigger than 2GB because of the FAT32 limitations. In the PC Hard Drive modes, the maximum file size is 2GB for AVI files and 4GB for all the other types of files.
